Trowel size drives this more than anything else, and trowel size follows tile size. Manufacturer charts put a 50 lb bag at roughly 80–100 sq ft with a 1/4 in notch for small tile, 60–80 sq ft with a 1/4 × 3/8 in notch for typical 12 in floor tile, and 40–50 sq ft with a 1/2 in notch for large format. This planner picks the band your tile size calls for rather than using one flat number.

It depends on tile size, joint width, and tile thickness. Small tiles with wide joints use far more grout than large tiles with tight joints. This planner uses the standard industry formula with your actual tile dimensions.
