Yard & Garden
Gravel Calculator & Aggregate Planner
Driveways, paths, drainage, and paver base. Enter the area and depth, pick a material, and get volume, approximate weight, and cost priced both by the yard and by the ton.
Before you build
Aggregate weight varies with moisture content, gradation, and material. Tonnage figures are approximations — confirm with your supplier before ordering by weight.
Common questions
How many tons of gravel are in a cubic yard?
Roughly 1.3 to 1.4 tons for common crushed stone, but it depends on the material and how wet it is. This planner uses the density for the material you select and shows both figures so you can price a supplier either way.
How deep should gravel be for a driveway?
Four to six inches is a typical planning figure for a residential gravel driveway, often in two layers with a coarser base underneath. Soft or clay soils need more, and a geotextile fabric underneath.
Why does the weight estimate vary so much?
Aggregate weight changes with moisture, stone type, and how the material is graded. A wet load can weigh noticeably more than a dry one. Always confirm with your supplier before ordering by the ton.
